Magic is dangerous – but love is more dangerous still…
When sixteen-year-old Tessa Grey arrives in England during the reign of Queen Victoria, something terrifying is waiting for her in London’s Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gas lit streets. Friendless and hunted, Tessa seeks refuge with the Shadow hunters, a band of warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons. Drawn ever deeper into their world, she finds herself fascinated by – and torn between – two best friends, and quickly realizes that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.

Clockwork Angel is the first book in a trilogy prequel to Clare’s bestselling fantasy series, The Mortal Instruments. It is set in Victorian London 1878 and is based around main character, 16 year old Tessa Grey. Tessa has just traveled to London from New York, in the hope of being reunited with her brother Nathanial. Instead, she finds herself kidnapped upon arrival by 2 warlocks that call themselves the Dark Sisters. It is here that Tessa is exposed to a hidden supernatural world, and finds out that she has her own supernatural powers…
When the home of the Dark Sisters comes under attack, Tessa is rescued by a shadow hunter – Will Herondale, and is taken to an institute for safety where she is introduced to more shadow hunters including Will’s best friend, James “Jem” Carstairs. The quest then begins to find Nathanial, and to discover the reason behind Tessa’s kidnapping…

I found this book really difficult to get into at first.
I didn’t start to get excited, nor did I even remotely like some of these characters until more towards the end of the book, and no matter how hard I tried, I didn’t find this love triangle very convincing.
The character of Will, who’s confident, modest, and at times rude personality really rubs Tessa (and everyone else) the wrong way throughout the entire book, but suddenly she is falling right into his arms! Will has the good looks and bad boy personality, but is harboring a secret that is getting in the way of his emotions and his feelings for Tessa.
Then there’s Jem – the nice guy of the story who is always friendly to everyone, and being Will’s best friend, is the only one who can handle him.
Jem and Tessa become very close throughout the book, but seemed more like friends than anything else to me!

I did especially love the time period that the story was set in! What girl doesn’t love a story with pretty dresses, impeccable manners and a love triangle!
Even though I thought this book was slow at the beginning, by the time I got to the end I found that I had actually fallen in love with all three main characters and I truly enjoyed the story line. There were some exciting action scenes that left me on the edge of my seat, and overall, I think it was a great prequel to the much loved series, The Mortal Instruments. With The Infernal Devices also being a series, the last chapter left an exciting opening for the second book, Clockwork Prince!
