LEFT ME WANTING MORE!
Title: Barely Breathing
Author: Rebecca Donovan
Genre: Young Adult – Contemporary Romance
Pages : 420
Emma’s struggle with an abusive home life came to a heart pounding conclusion in the final chapters of Reason to Breathe. Now everyone in Weslyn knows Emma’s secret, but Carol can’t hurt Emma anymore. Some are still haunted by the horror of that night, and some must face the repercussions of their choices.
As soon as I finished the first book of this series, Reason to Breathe, I immediately needed to start book two – Barely Breathing. I was desperate to have an answer to Reason to Breathes traumatizing ending. This book begins six months after Reason to Breathe, and Emma is now living with her best friend Sara’s family. She is slowly beginning to act like a normal teenage girl and is getting her life back on track.
I found Barely Breathing a much more comfortable read than Reason to Breathe. Emma was less frustrating in this book as she was more forthcoming with any issues or problems she was having. Sara and her other friend Evan were more aware and observant of any changes in Emma, which prompted her to become more open with them. There will still some moments when I wanted to yell at her because of her unplanned decisions and guarded answers. Then at other times I just wanted to give her a big hug, as it was evident she was still dealing with her abuse.
In this book we are introduced to Emma’s mother Rachel, and her boyfriend Jonathon. I absolutely loathed both of these characters due to their attitudes, ideals and actions that have a huge impact on Emma’s life. We also see more of a development in her relationship with Evan, as they take everything to the next level.
I think that Rebecca Donovan has written an emotional and wonderful book, which really succeeds in toying with your emotions! Barely Breathing has a major cliff hanger at the end that has left me wanting more! I absolutely cannot wait to read the third instalment – Out of Breathe!
