LEFT ME BREATHLESS!
Title: Reason to breathe
Author: Rebecca Donovan
In the affluent town of Weslyn, Connecticut, where most people worry about what to seen in and who to be seen with, Emma Thomas would rather not be seen at all. She’s more concerned with feigning perfection while pulling down her sleeves to conceal bruises – not wanting anyone to know how far from perfect her life truly is. Without expecting it, she finds love. It challenges her to recognize her own worth – at the risk of revealing the terrible secret she’s desperate to hide.
This book is based around main character Emma Thomas, who despite being a talented basketball player, and best friends with Sara, the most popular girl in school; would rather blend into the background and keep to herself in fear of someone finding out the terrible secrets that surround her home life. Whilst Sara suspects that something is going on, due to the daily bruising she sees on Emma, she never tells anyone, nor pushes Emma to talk about it. Sara does try to make life easier for Emma by taking her out whenever they find an opportune moment, and even though Emma is not interested in parties or boys, there is a glimmer of hope for her when she meets the new boy in town, Evan Matthews.
Reason to Breathe was quite a heavy and heartbreaking book to read. At times I did find Emma’s character quite frustrating because throughout the book she seemed to have the support around her to make this awful, emotional abuse stop, yet could not bring herself to take the chance. At other times however, the reasons behind why she chose to keep the abuse a secret were quite clear.
Donovan’s ability to handle such an emotionally charged topic while at the same time creating a sympathetic character in Emma, has left me on the edge of my seat to find out how her story ends. Overall, while it was an emotional story, I could not put this book down, and would definitely recommend it to anyone to read.
